History

In 1876, previous California Governor Leland Stanford obtained 650 sections of land of Rancho San Francisquito for a nation home and started the advancement of his popular Palo Alto Stock Farm. He later purchased bordering properties totaling more than 8,000 sections of territory.

The little town that was starting to develop close to the area took the name Palo Alto (tall tree) after a monster California redwood on the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The tree itself is still here and would later turned into the college's image and centerpiece of its official seal.


Leland Stanford, who grew up and considered rule in New York, moved West after the gold rush and, in the same way as other of his rich counterparts, completed his chance in the railroad. He was a founder of the Republican Party, governmental leader of California and afterward a U.S. representative. He and Jane had single child, who kicked the bucket of typhoid fever in 1884 when the family was leaving for Italy. Leland Jr. was only 15. Inside weeks of his end, the Stanford’s chose that, on the basis that they no more could do anything for their own child , "the offspring of California may be our kids." They quickly set going to discover a long-term approach to memorialize their darling son.
